You don’t have to go anywhere. It’s right on your computer.
Recently I discovered photographer Karin van Mierlo, a native of the Netherlands, who’s been living in Lisbon for the past three years. If you’re into taking pictures–and frankly it seems everyone is, these days–read on.
Aspiring photographers can enjoy free content on Karin’s blog. She finds inspiration for her posts everywhere she goes in Lisbon, always with her camera in hand. But shutterbugs can also take it further with an online photography course platform, Photography Playground or one-on-one mentoring.
Karin didn’t let Covid-19 stop her or the members of her Facebook group, for whom she created a Stay Home at Photography Playground challenge. With recently restrictions being eased, Karin began a new series of photos around the theme of Lisbon waking up after lockdown. Called Lisbon Emerging, it consists of people exiting the popular Baixa Chiado metro station, with the metro a metaphor for the underground lives we’ve all been living these past months.
Keep safe and happy and learning, everyone!
Great post
After a month-long preparation and presentation effort for International Living from June through July, and leaving my post as Portugal Correspondent on August 1, I took six weeks off from everything to regroup. Just back now (as you see from my Rosh Hashanah post) and want to thank you for your response, Cathy. Hope you are staying safe!
Great metaphor! I want off the escalator! Thanks
Jean, as I wrote below, I had a month-long preparation and presentation effort for International Living from June through July, and left my post as Portugal Correspondent on August 1. I took six weeks off from everything to regroup. Thanks always for reading and writing, and forgive me for being remiss with that. Blessings to you and yours.

I am a lover of Portugal and wish to move there from the US. However, I have not been able to find a source for medical insurance at anywhere near the price you mentioned in your recent youtube video of $1300 per year. Just cannot find anything in this range. Please inform me of any additional information you may have on insurance companies that supports your $1300 payment. Really appreciate any references you may have. Love your videos and your positive broadcasts regarding Portugal. I could not agree more with you. You Lift my spirits. Thank you.
Michael, thanks for reading, and sorry for the delay in response (explained below).
Take a look at this site for a quotation: https://www.medis.pt/english/ Here’s an actual review from a British woman I know:
“I do use Medis Senior and have been quite happy with it. Prior to Medis I was using one of the expat providers which cost over 2000€ a year and didn’t include anything but emergency care or hospital stays. Medis costs me a little over 500€ per year and for a small co-pay all my doctor’s visits and health needs are covered. You can go to any hospital that is on their list. I have chosen Hospital Da Luz as it provides almost everything I need in the way of check-ups and preventive medicine. Medis has also recently included a 24 hour number to be able to speak to a nurse. There are other similar programmes, but I have been quite happy with this.”
Also look into the Automobile Clube de Portugal (https://join.acp.pt/) for both car and health insurance.
I’m happy that I’ve lifted your spirits. Keep them up and keep well in every way!
